I recently heard about the WWW Wednesday meme after a post Tamika made about it, and I couldn’t resist taking part! Though I am a day late (hopefully it’s still Wednesday somewhere in the world). Hosted by Sam, the concept of WWW Wednesday is simple, all you need to do is answer the following questions (which are also known as the three W’s).
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently reading: For the past few months, I’ve been reading my way through Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books. I adored her first two series The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, and two days ago I started reading book one
of The Dark Artifices trilogy, Lady Midnight. I’m 226 pages in, and absolutely loving it so far! Like most fans, I’m so impressed by the complex world Cassandra Clare has created and I’d be happy for her to continue writing Shadowhunters books forever. And from what I’ve read, she’s got books planned until at least 2024, so she’s definitely going to be keeping us fans busy for a little while longer at least!
Lady Midnight takes place five years after The Mortal Instruments series, and focuses on Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn family, characters who were introduced in City of Heavenly Fire. Emma lost both of her parents during the Dark War and has since sought to find answers about their murder. From what I’ve heard, this series features a whole lot of teen angst as Emma and her Parabati Julian Blackthorn begin to develop romantic feelings for one another. Romantic relationships are forbidden between Parabati, so neither can act upon their love.
I cant wait to read more about Emma and Julian, their friendship is so beautiful, and I can already see that things are beginning to heat up between them! Another thing I love about the Shadowhunters books is the way the stories intertwine and some characters appear in multiple series. Everyone’s favourite warlock Magnus Bane has just showed up in Lady Midnight, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll make a few more appearances!
Recently finished reading: The last book I finished reading was Tales from the Shadow Academy, which was also written by Cassandra Clare but features contributions from a variety of other authors including Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman. I was a bit sceptical about the other authors being involved, but I enjoyed this book just as much as the ones Clare wrote on her own. I don’t want to say too much about the plot, as it’s very hard to do so without spoiling the ending of City of Heavenly Fire, so I’ll keep this fairly brief. Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy takes place between the end of The Mortal Instruments and the beginning of The Dark Artifices. The book mostly focuses on one character’s journey to ascend from average human to Shadowhunter. Though it’s primarily set in 2009 (approximately) there are many flashbacks, the book features stories set in both the late 1800’s and the 1980’s.
Overall, I would definitely recommend the book to any fan of Cassandra Clare. Tales of the Shadowhunter Academy is a bit lighter in tone than most of her other books and I found myself laughing in many scenes, though there were some unexpected tragedies late in the book.
What I’m reading next: Well, next on my immediate TBR is Lord of Shadows, the sequel to Lady Midnight. However, I do think I’ve spent enough time in this post fangirling over Cassie Clare, so here’s a short list of some other books I’m hoping to read soon.
- Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Maas (once it’s released on September 5th!)
- When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon (which I’ll be buddy reading with Brooklyn)
- The Kiss of Deception by Mary Pearson
Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned in this post? If you have, let me know what you thought of them in the comments!
